Why is a therapist promoting coaching services?
I know what you’re Probably thinking…
Isn’t Coaching a Scam? Aren’t you a real therapist?
You might be wondering, “Isn't coaching a scam? Aren't you a real therapist?” Firstly, yes, I am a licensed therapist- if that’s what you mean. We won’t even get started on what constitutes as a “real” therapist atm, but just know: coaching is not and should not be a substitute for therapy. Period.
Coaching is booming right now, with all types of coaches—social media coaches, dating coaches, business and mindset coaches, even coaches that teach you how to be a coach! It can be scammy, and I've seen the scams myself. Some people lie and do so confidently. Others are loud and wrong, arrogantly pushing their services. Arrogance can look like confidence and convince you that someone is trustworthy when they don’t know squat; it’s ridiculous I know. Unlike licensed therapists, coaches aren’t bound by the same strict ethical codes or laws. This unregulated environment has led to many claiming expertise without the necessary background or training, using coaching as a get-rich-quick scheme.
You still with me? If you made it this far, you're at least curious...keep reading, please. I'm gonna break it down for you, I promise.
What Coaching is and what it ain’t…
It ain't therapy! Hopefully this is the last time I’ll say this….
Coaching is never medically necessary, so there is zero insurance coverage, and coaches are not medical or mental health care providers. Coaching cannot provide diagnosis and related treatment plans. It should never feel clinical. This can be beneficial as diagnoses can unfortunately be stigmatizing. The diagnosis can be used as a label and cause more harm than good personally, and it can also be restrictive, affecting job prospects and travel opportunities. Coaching is not a substitute for therapy—mental health is wealth.
Coaches are professionals you pay for a service, not your friends. Do your friends pour into you without reciprocation??? As your wellness coach, I’m here to help you reach your goals, not the other way around. Coaching is always solutions-oriented, goal-oriented, and future-focused, focusing on the how and not the why. It’s not really mean’t to be introspective or diagnostic. It’s aims are to help you see and reach your potential by setting realistic and attainable goals. Wellness coaching in particular addresses physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, and interpersonal wellness. It is strategic action oriented, focusing on changing your mindset and holding you accountable for your goals outside of mental health needs.
What wellness coaching looks like with me…
Wellness coaching with me is like receiving a warm yet firm hug—supportive but ensuring we stand on business. I'm gentle, but I make sure we circle back to the task at hand. We'll set large and small goals and strategically concoct a plan of execution. Whether you’re avoiding an email, struggling to ask for a raise, or aiming for a promotion, we’ll make a plan and focus on execution. Want to improve in dating, friendship, or budgeting? Let’s work on changing your behavior and mindset to achieve those goals. Let’s work towards your overall well-being together.
Now that you know I’m the real deal. Let me tell you what sets me apart from other wellness coaches. As a licensed therapist, I understand when concerns require therapeutic intervention. While I can't provide therapy as your coach, I can refer you to competent clinicians I know and trust. I'm creative, well-educated, radical in my thinking, and deeply invested in your wellness and well-being. I bring authenticity and genuine care to our sessions. I practice what I preach and am deeply committed to community. Just like a gardener tending to plants through different seasons, I want to help nurture your growth and transformation. With a wealth of personal lived experiences, professional expertise, and academic knowledge, I am motivating and affirming. I'm not just a regular coach—I'm a mentor with a unique blend of experiences.
TL;DR: Basically, I'm not a regular coach; I'm a cool coach, and I know my shhh…stuff.
